ZANESVILLE, Ohio– Five Zane Grey Elementary students claimed their prize at Walls of Books Monday.

These students won the “Battle of the Books” competition at the John McIntire Library. And the grand prize is picking out a book for the school library and a book for them to take home.

“It’s really a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together support students in an activity around literacy and reading,” said John McItire Library Assistant Director Blair Tom. “And today the combination of celebrating that success, it’s really been wonderful to see the different partnerships including teachers and educators. But also family and friends and area businesses.”

This is an initiative that’s a part of the Dollar General Literacy Foundation Grant program.Tom said battle of the books exceeded his expectations.

“There were some unintended benefits as far as students working together, using critical thinking skills, initiating their plans for how they were going to read the books, and divide responsibilities. That piece we has not fully anticipated and that has been wonderful. And the post surveys that we’re receiving, indicates that students are still very enthusiastic about reading. And as a result continue read as much or possibly more throughout the summer and to discuss books with their peers and family members,” said Tom.

Tom said the responds from students, teachers, and parents has been supportive. He looks forward to next year’s event.
