Residents Raise 10K for Cancer Research

People braved the dreary weather Saturday morning for a good cause…

The Franklin Local school district held its third annual Mini-Relay for Life Saturday to raise money for cancer research. Cancer survivor LuAnn Gatewood said more community members get involved every year.

"We used to take a team from our school district to the main relay, but it seemed harder and harder every year to get enough people to come. So I thought, ‘Maybe I should try to have one back here in our own community,’ and it’s been phenomenal," said Gatewood.

All of the cancer survivors took a "victory lap" around the track. Gatewood said there’s one thing she hopes the participants will take away from the event.

"Cancer…Although it is terrible, we can’t quit fighting it. We have to keep raising money. I feel as a survivor it behooves me to do that."

The Mini-Relay for Life raised over 10,000 dollars… 3,000 more than initially anticipated.
