Big Brothers/Big Sisters Commemorates National Mentoring Month

ZANESVILLE, Ohio — “It’s just a few hours of time for the mentor once a week.”

Jenni Masterson leads the staff at Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Zanesville. She’s encouraging mentoring, and becoming involved as a volunteer, as the days tick by into the new year.

“These one to one relationships really help a child’s life and make a big impact. Every couple of weeks and kids are finding that they’re learning how to have a relationship, they’re learning to navigate and find ways to deal with all of their problems that they normally wouldn’t if they didn’t have a person in their lives,” Masterson tells WHIZ News.

Mentors play a huge role in the success of their organization, and in the development of a child or teenager. Masterson says a lot of families enroll their children in Big Brothers/Big Sisters programs from one parent families, parents who are serving jail time & those facing challenges and job struggles.

“There are a lot of opioid struggles in the world right now. So, we’re here to help that child navigate this and help that parent or guardian taking care of that child just have an extra person in their lives to give support,” Mastersays says.

Big Brothers/Big Sisters conducts background checks on all incoming volunteers. Find out more by calling (740) 453-7300 or visiting this website.
