Many Honored at MLK Jr Breakfast

Many members of the community gather together to honor the memory of Martin Luther King Junior and to move his legacy forward.

Monday morning the 19th Annual Martin Luther King Junior Scholarship Fund Prayer Breakfast took place. 32 high school students were presented with $500 scholarships to help further their education. Education is something King strongly believed in.

"It’s not specific to one generation or to one race, but it’s to everyone and his whole philosophy was for all of us to be able to live together in harmony, but to also use education as a way out of some of our situations," said Co-chair Carlotta Workman.

Scholarship recipients have many plans for life after high school. Some will become accountants, others move into marketing and some doctors.

"It helps me go forward to become a doctor," said Maysville High School Senior Amy Smith. "That’s my long term goal is to become that or a physician assistant. Right now, I’m doing sports medicine, but that’s going to help me be able to prepare myself and be able to look forward to achieving my goals."

Along with the scholarship winners, five men from were honored for their commitment to the area. One of those is Mark Haven, who’s the director of orchestras for Zanesville City Schools.

"I was surprised that I was one of the honorees," said Haven. "It feels wonderful. The recognition feels really good and I am just indebted to the board of trustees of the Martin Luther King Jr Breakfast."

Three current college students were also awarded scholarships to fund their education.
