Weather Update

Unnamed

ZANESVILLE, Ohio-Over the past week or so, WHIZ has received numerous calls, emails, etc., regarding the temperature on the website and app being incorrect or stuck at 72°.

A little background on what is happening…

The official observations for Zanesville are taken at the Zanesville Municipal Airport (KZZV) via an Automated Surface Observation System (ASOS). The ASOS machine is maintained by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Towards the end of June, the KZZV ASOS began malfunctioning. This resulted in a communication error with the ASOS.

The temperature display on the website pulls directly from the KZZV ASOS for it’s temperatures. This is a standard procedure with most apps, websites, etc., that use weather data. However, because of the communication issues, everything that relies on the KZZV ASOS for data display is not showing the proper temperature, conditions, etc. The last temperature reading that was sent through via the ASOS station was on 3 July 2021 at around 8:57 PM EDT, in which the temperature was 72°.

Because of this issue, the temperature for Zanesville on a lot of my maps is also down. There are ways around this, to a degree, but the issue is that there is simply no data being sent out from the KZZV ASOS. This also means, no climate report, no present temperature observations, no correct temperature on the website, etc.

We have spoken with the NWS about this, and the FAA is also working on getting the ASOS fixed. In the meantime, the temperature on the website and app will not display the correct temperature. Sometimes, we have been lucky and gotten the daily climate report for KZZV the following day, but about half the time we do not. Thus, I have to use other methods for getting our data.

Hopefully the issue will be resolved soon.
