ZANESVILLE, OH – The State Fire Marshals Office and the Zanesville City Fire Department partnered up with Zanesville City Schools to educate students on fire safety.

The Zanesville City Fire Department in conjunction with the State Fire Marshals Office presented a program to students explaining safety procedures. They discussed the importance of checking their smoke detectors and creating a fire escape plan at home.

“Create a fire escape plan, and then we want you to practice it. When it is dark and it’s smokey and there’s heat and all that’s going on, we want to make sure that you’re going to revert back to whatever you have practiced. We want them to go home, practice that with their family, and have that special meeting place. So, when everybody’s out, mom and dad can count heads and make sure that everybody’s safe.” Zanesville City Fire Chief, Jeff Bell said.

The students were sent home to do a safety review with their families where they checked to make sure smoke detectors were in their homes. Smoke detectors will be provided to students who did not have any.

“The bigger picture was presenting information from people that have actually experienced fires and the safety precautions, both from a proactive way and a reactive way. They also were able to provide students with scenarios, each of the children had to think about what they would do in regard to their own personal safety plan they have at their house with their parents or loved ones and I think that’s important as well.” Zanesville City Schools Superintendent, Doug Baker said.

The fire department plans on returning to the schools for additional fire safety programs.
