Tips for Safe Holiday Shopping

ZANESVILLE, OH – The Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office is urging the public to use caution if you are buying Christmas presents online this year.

Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz recommends having a plan if you’re expecting some deliveries.

“Try to have a plan with a neighbor, family member, or close friend for when you are expecting a package,“ Lutz said. “You can be notified by email when a package is out for delivery or about to be delivered so that someone can grab it for you.”

If you see one of these “Porch Pirates” attempting to steal a neighbor’s package, call your local police immediately.

“If you see something, say something,” Lutz said. “When you are familiar with your neighborhood, you can tell which cars are your neighbors and which ones don’t belong. It doesn’t take that long to gather some important details on the vehicle and then call the police.”

Lutz says it’s also important to be mindful when you are out at the stores, trying to snag good deals.

He recommends parking in a well lit area, not to leave valuables in your vehicle, and when you are leaving the store to leave with a group.

If you do have to leave items in your car, Lutz recommends placing them in the trunk of your car.
