Starlight Athletes Receive Funding for State Competition
A pep rally was held at Starlight School to celebrate nine special Olympic athletes who will be going to states this June.
To make this happen, area masons donated $600 to help fund their big trip to Columbus where they will compete at the Ohio State University.
" All that money basically helps to fund state events and it costs $140 per athlete and per person. So we have coaches going also as well as volunteers and so nobody pays a thing so we have to fund all that stuff through fundraisers, so the masons have really chipped in and helped a lot," said Sandy Drenten, Leisure Specialist.
The athletes will participate in a variety of sports throughout the weekend including track and field and basketball. The student have been working hard to prepare for the competition.
" Practices are now for states will be held Wednesday afternoon, we do the running, the softball throwing, just kind of walking and being in shape because it is a very long weekend," said Drenten.
The state competition will take place on June 27, 28 and 29 and we wish them luck on their exciting journey.
