September Investment Committee Meeting

The monthly investment committee meeting was held at Muskingum County Commissioners Thursday afternoon.

The current interest rate environment is not the best but it has gradually been improving over the last 10 years, especially over the last 3. Treasurer of Muskingum County, Carol Friel says during the month of September the county has invested in a few different instruments. Friel told us they are excited about this months transactions.

"What we’re excited about is we’ve made some new transactions in September, and we are making our money work for us and we will earn more. We’ve put it into different bond markets that you were hearing about that will mature over time and that will help our interest rates and we will earn more."

The investment in these bonds is important because the county works off of the interest. Friel says based on earnings so far, the county should be able to meet the yearly budget.

"What I’ve budgeted for this year we should be able to meet based on what our money is earning. That’s what we’re always trying to reach because the county is dependent on the budget. You know we work off of a budget, and if I predict we are going to earn a certain dollar amount or not we have to make an adjustment."

Friel feels that the county is sitting in a very good place financially.
