Muskingum County Flag at Zane State College

There is a new maroon flag at Zane State College Monday.

At a dedication this morning Zane State received an official Muskingum County flag. The Advanced Science and Technology Center sits on the same site that the county home once did. Members of the county home helped to create the design for the flag. The college’s President, Dr. Paul Brown is happy to have the flag back on such an historic site for the county.

"Please come in and see the flag as we display it here because we’re very proud of it," Brown said. "I know that everybody that’s been involved will be proud of it as well."

Officials approached the county home to create a flag for the county in 2001. The members of the county home decided it was best to put their memories of Muskingum County into the flag. That’s why the seven images seen on the flag are present. They tell the story of Muskingum County.

"It was a joint effort," Roger Penos, the designer of the county flag said. "It was kind of a thing to get the elderly people in the county involved, which they really like to do. They like to express their views, where they lived and what was done, and what they’ve seen as the country grew and changed."

Penos said there is a lot of history in the flag. It includes images of The Wilds, pottery, agriculture and other things that are a part of Muskingum County’s culture.
