50th Anniversary of John D. Sulsberger Stadium
For the past 50 years the Zanesville Blue Devils have played football inside John D. Sulsberger Stadium.
As the Blue Devil’s season concludes this week they’ll be having a special tribute for the 50th anniversary. Zanesville High School Athletic Director Scott Aronhalt said it is important to remember the past.
"It’s critical," said Aronhalt. "I think that’s one of the things that overall if you look in society today I don’t think we do a good job of understanding where we have come from, what we have been given in the past and then really our responsibility to improve on what was given to us and not just take advantage of it, so it’s a critical message, and I think it’s a great educational message to our young people."
Before the game Friday night against Marietta there will be a reading on the history of the stadium. Aronhalt said when the stadium opened in 1964 it was like the Taj Mahal of high school football stadiums.
"Just trying to kind of reflect a little bit and go back and show some appreciation for what was given to us," said Aronhalt. "And also really letting the public know we have added to the beauty of the stadium."
The school is also selling shirts with an image of the stadium as it was in 1964. The shirts will cost $10.
