John O. Montgomery Passes Away at the Age of 83

A well-known Muskingum County man has died.

83-year-old John Montgomery, who had been in failing health for several months passed away last night at the Genesis Good Samaritan Hospital. Montgomery graduated from Ohio State University and came back to Zanesville to marry his wife, Dorothy Mae Culberston. Montgomery’s daughter, Susan McDonald explained that after serving time in the Air Force together, John and Dorothy moved back to Zanesville where he built their home and they later began a family.

"Dad was a banker, he worked at Citizens National Bank when he came out of college and he retired from there in 1967. He sold insurance and worked as a real estate agent for a while. And when I was little, I knew my family was active in the community and I knew they were busy, but I didn’t understand the value of that until I became an adult myself and understood the impact that giving back to your community has."

Montgomery was involved in the chamber of commerce, he was an active member of the Ark Spring Baptist Church and served as an adviser at the Muskingum County 4-H program for 62 years.

"I think that both of my parents will be remembered as a legacy of kindness and love and a strong marriage and a solid foundation."

Calling hours are Sunday 2-4 and 6-8 at the Bolin-Dierkes funeral home there will also be a viewing Monday from 10-11 at Ark Spring Baptist Church where the funeral will be at 11.
