Local Couple Taking A Break From Consumption

The winter months bring a rush of people buying and spending money on material items for the holiday season, but one local couple is choosing to take a break from that.

Jay and Annie Warmke, owners of Blue Rock Station in Philo are taking part in their annual Thanks For Nothing Month. This year, they are making it a three month event, lasting until February. During this month, the Warmke’s refrain from any kind of consumption such as spending money and using energy. We spoke to Annie who told us the experience allows you to catch up on life.

"Well its very freeing. You talk about homeland security, we have all the food we need. People are always checking in to see whats going on because they’re voyeurs and they like to you know, say, ‘guess what Annie and Jay are doing this month.’ and its relaxing."

During the winter months, their friends show up to share meals and fun. It is also a time to explore how their solar generators will work, which they invented. Warmke suggests everyone give it a try.

"I think lots of people should think about it, especially from a financial standpoint, because if you’re shopping, you probably don’t need it. I mean most people, I don’t care who you are, can figure out another way to take care of what they are going to go by."

The farm also includes llamas, pigs, chickens, goats, dogs and cats also live on the Warmke’s property.
