Johnson Named Artcoz Artist of the Month
ZANESVILLE, OH – Misty Johnson has been named the Artcoz Artist of the Month for September.
Johnson began working with pottery when she was in college at Kent State University. She took a pottery class as a part of her required courses and never looked back. Johnson said since then she’s been working with different textures and glazing techniques on pieces to make each a one of a kind.
“I make all my pieces on the pottery wheel and I make things that I think are really beautiful to look at but are also functional and you can use everyday,” Johnson explained. “I really like to experiment with a lot of different textures, sometimes I carve into the pieces, sometimes I’ll add a really wet layer of clay on top called slip, so it has a really organic, flowy, texture. I like to think about how the glazes are going to flow over those textures as I’m creating them so I always have something in mind.”
Johnson will be at BunkoJess Gallery, located next to Weasel Boy Brewing Company, for the First Friday Artwalk from 5 to 9PM. She said she can’t wait for the community to come in and see all of her different pieces of art.
“I have pottery on display here at BunkoJess Gallery all the time but for my featured artist show, the gallery owner, Jessica Spires, she cleared out a whole space for me to spread out,” Johnson said. “I’ve got over 100 pieces on display, so I’m really excited because this is the most I’ve had in a display outside of a festival setting.”
