Cold Safety For Pets

The cold weather is taking another turn for the worse, and you are being encouraged to remember the safety of your pets.

We stopped by The Animal Shelter Society to chat with Executive Director Jody Murray about the topic. Murry explained that this is a topic that people tend to easily forget about.

“Pets don’t do a good job communicating to people so, I think a lot of times because they have their fur coats on, it’s an easy thing for people to forget so its just a good time of year to remember that they need some special care with these cold temperatures we’re having.”

20 and below are the temperatures that you need to be concerned about. Straw, fresh water and lots of blankets are things that you should provide your pet if they live outdoors. Extra food is always good because they burn more calories. Good shelter is also a necessity to shield them from wintry precipitation. Murray says there are many resources in the area you can turn to for supplies.

“There’s farm stores here locally in Zanesville there’s also farmers that sell straw, things like that. I think the main thing is planning ahead. You know, don’t wait till you run out and then go try to find it in times there can be shortages of those kinds of things especially with the cold weather we’ve had and that we continue to have.”

The best way to learn about keeping your pets warm is to do an internet seach. There are many different resources available to you.
