Motivating through Humor

During his speech to people at the Chamber of Commerce’s Spring Break event, Jon Petz used humor and even a little magic to keep people’s attention.

He even pulled people on stage with him. Petz said getting people engaged at the start of a day is key to what he does. He commented that he could simply put up a powerpoint, read it and say see you later, but he said that’s not going to inspire anyone.

“We have to have fun,” Petz said. “I always have two objectives, one we want them to walk out the door with something to think about differently then they came in. Two we have to enjoy the process. I could have put 50 powerpoint slides up, thanks for coming have a good day, right?”

He drove home many messages in his talk but said one is key. He feels creating significance in each moment can be life changing to people you’re interacting with in any moment.

“We talked about creating significance, who they are and what they do,” Petz said. “And the simplest moments in our life can be the most significant and we may never realize that that moment’s happening. So we looked at how we can identify the simple moments, how we can appreciate those simple moments and how we can deliver the simple moments for other people so we can create these memorable interactions as we go through life.”

After his speech, dozens of people approached Petz to share different things they picked from it. He said that’s the part that is wonderful to him as it allows him to see what different people pull from each speech he gives.
