Monkey Business in Crooksville: Primate Sanctuary in the Works

Crooksville, OHPerry county usually isn’t one for monkey business, that is until recently.

Plans for a primate sanctuary in Crooksville are in the works. Dr. Wilde, Executive Director of For the Love of Primates, fell in love with primates while pursuing her degree. During her master’s research, she saw the need for sanctuaries and the impact they can have on primates that need housing.

“I just saw the great need for more space for animals like this because there are several primate sanctuaries in the US, but they’re all functioning at capacity. There are a lot of places that would really like to retire their primates, and they simply have nowhere to go,” Wilde said.

As a non-profit, For the Love of Primates relies on fundraising. Donations of any size are welcome, and supporters can also participate in the “buy a tile” program.

“We will have two animal care buildings that can collectively house almost 100 animals if they were at full capacity, we’ll also have a veterinary and quarantine facility.”

The facilities will also include administrative buildings and educational space for events and workshops. And for all the people who are scared that planet of the apes may become a reality, don’t worry. The sanctuary promises to meet rigorous safety and care standards.

“Rest assured we will be accredited by multiple bodies including the global federation of animal sanctuaries and the USDA. This is not some backyard ownership situation where you can risk those things. All of the animals will be fully well taken care of, so the risk of escape is very very low.”
