Celebrating Right to Read Week

Maysville Elementary and the Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department are taking students beyond the classroom to celebrate Right to Read Week.

All week, students at Maysville Elementary are learning about leading a healthy life. To start the week, students got to pot a tomato plant to grow over the summer.

Workers with the Health Department assisted the students in learning about caring for the plants. One of the workers, Health Educator Kris Bell explained how the hands on learning benefits students.

“It’s very important because the schools have a lot of things that they want to educate the students on, and it’s also important for them to know how to better themselves as a whole person with wellness as well as academics,” she said.

Two fourth graders, Arissa Savage and Hayden Donaldson said doing the hands on activities is like escaping school for a little while, noting that it doesn’t even feel like they’re in school.

“Not really,” they said together. Hayden continued to say, “we’re not just sitting in one spot all day and writing a lot.”

Students rotate throughout the day between the hands on lessons and learning in the classroom. Students will continue to celebrate Right to Read Week all week with different physical and mental activities, in and out of the classroom.
