Ceremony held for Fallen Civil War Veterans

31 Civil War Veterans from Muskingum County were honored for paying the ultimate price for their country.

“This was the 31 soldiers that was in the civil war and they were brought back here for burial,” said Adjutant for Amvets Post 1992 Jeffory Dittmar. “This plot right here that you see around me here was devised for that specific process for those Civil War Veterans because they knew there wasn’t going to be a lot more coming back to the county.”

Dr. David Schroder captured the essence of Abe Lincoln when he recited the Gettysburg Address from memory. He acts as Commander for Disabled Veterans in Zanesville and served in Vietnam where he was wounded three times but he made it home. Schroder spends today thinking of his fellow soldiers that weren’t so lucky.

“During the eight months that I was there, 10 men in my company were killed,” said Schroder. “After I got sent home, three of my closer friends were killed so that caused some survivors guilt. It’s appropriate that we should remember especially the ones who died during the Civil War to establish the right of freedom for every citizen regardless of their race or their ethnic background and that every person can have an opportunity to succeed and live a good life in this wonderful country. ”

The ceremony included prayers, and ended with a 21 Gun Salute.
