AEP Ohio Shares Winter Energy Tips
ZANESVILLE, OH – As temperatures drop, heating bills can rise- but AEP Ohio has simple ways to save on energy costs while keeping your home warm this winter.
Simple steps can make a big difference in reducing energy usage and staying comfortable during the colder months. One of the first steps is to make sure your home is properly weatherproofed to prevent the cold air from getting in. Proper insulation in your attic and basement also helps keep warm air inside your home.
“Some of the things that you can do to decrease the amount of electricity you’re using is really focus on that thermostat. We recommend our customers set their thermostat at 68 degrees, but you really have to do whatever is safe and comfortable for you and your family. Some of the other things that you can do is make sure that your house is weatherproof and that you don’t have any leaks. You can check windows and door frames for leaks and add additional weather stripping. You could check your attic to make sure that there’s a proper amount of insulation as well and that there aren’t any leaks there,” AEP Ohio Customer Experience Manager Julia Ivinskas said.
It’s also important to make sure that your HVAC system is regularly maintained. A well-maintained heating system runs more efficiently. Another surprising tip is to make use of ceiling fans this winter.
“An HVAC company can come out to maintain your furnace, and change your furnace filters every three months or whatever the manufactures recommendations are for that. Another thing you can do, is use a ceiling fan. A lot of people think of those for summertime, but they can also be helpful in the wintertime if you have it in the clockwise direction. It’s like a winter setting and it’ll push the warm air down to help warm up the room,” Ivinskas said.
