More Problems For Buckeye Lake

An area lake where a faulty dam and lowered water levels are already biting into the summer economy now has another problem – algae blooms. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says in March that the 4.1 mile dam at Buckeye Lake was in danger of failing and causing a catastrophic flood. As a result, the water level is being kept at 3 feet for the summer. Now the state has issued toxic algae warnings for three beaches at the lake, where blooms have plagued boaters, swimmers and area businesses for years. Algae usually affects the lake in June and July, but experts predicted problems when the state decided to keep the water low. Rebuilding the dam is expected to take years.
