Zanesville City Schools To Offer Summer Lunch Program
Many schools are now out for the summer. This year, Zanesville City Schools is once again offering its summer lunch program.
Zanesville City Schools has been doing this for the youth in the community for about 9 years now which is federally funded by the USDA Program. We had the chance to speak to Vicki Wheeler, Food Service Supervisor for the school district who told us more about the healthy lunch options.
"Sandwiches, fruits, vegetables, we do the fresh vegetables, fresh fruit. We have to follow the same guidelines for summer lunch as we do for the lunch program during the school year."
Last year in 45 days, a total of 39,230 lunches were served. Children from age 1 to 18 will be able to take advantage of the lunches. You have to eat the lunch at the park when you make a visit. Wheeler told us why they do this each summer.
"We find that kids tend to not eat as healthy in the summer. Mom and dad are working, they’re out playing hard, they’re not thinking about ‘it’s time to eat lunch’ and there’s just a need in our city to feed our kids."
There are 19 different parks and locations around the area that participate in the program. You can find a list of locations the lunches will be served at the website: www.zanesville.k12.oh.us
The program will run for 8 weeks, June 8th through August 7th.
