Robert “Bob” Elmer Longfellow, 87, of Mt. Vernon, Ohio died Sunday afternoon, March 9, 2025 at Knox Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon.
Born February11, 1938 in Zanesville, Ohio, he was a son of the late Elmer E. and Elsie Mae (Coler) Longfellow and a 1956 graduate of Frazeysburg High School. Bob was a Christian by faith and a past member of Mount Zion Masonic Lodge #9. He enjoyed being outdoors, camping, gardening, and tending to his chickens. Bob loved bread and sweets, especially from the Amish bakery down the road from his house. He would go to the bakery, buy bags of donuts and deliver them to local doctors. Bob and his wife, Karen, shared their love of caring for children by fostering over 50 individuals, but what Bob loved the most was spending time with his family.
Surviving is his wife of 61 years, Karen S. (Turner) Longfellow whom he married May 21, 1964; two children, daughter Stacia (Troy) Zimmerman and son, Raun Jay Longfellow both of Mt. Vernon; four grandchildren, Halle Zimmerman, Anna (Anthony Mullet) Zimmerman, Andrew (Paige) Vermillian, and Ronda O’Brien; five great grandchildren, Ryatt, Riley, Jazzlyn, Abbey, and Stevie Ray; one brother, Larry (Jean) Longfellow and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Jon Jay Longfellow; two brothers, Cecile “Cork” Longfellow and Donald “Don” Longfellow; four sisters, Viola “Pode” Longshore, Maxine “Mac” Newsome, Diane Turner, and Mary Louise “Dolly” Anders.
Friends and family may call 11 AM to 1 PM, Friday March 14, 2025 at the Frazeysburg Chapel of Vensil & Chute Funeral Home, 110 West Third Street.
Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Friday, March 14, 2025 at the funeral home with Minister Sam Dunn officiating. Bob will be laid to rest in Irville Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
