John Glenn Aiming for Improbable “Five-Peat” on Softball Diamond

NEW CONCORD, OH

Who says they can’t ‘five-peat’? Nearly half a decade of softball dominance in the big school division, John Glenn is ready to run it back once more in the MVL. With a new leader in tow, who’s to say that the Lady Muskies can’t achieve greatness once more?

“Every year we’re going to lose somebody. We got to make sure we’re getting the younger kids developed faster” says head coach Scott Johnson. “So once they hit high school, they can just replace the kids that passed on. It’s got to be down the system line. Running a ton of freshman high school to be ready to go and replace them. I mean, there’s no kids who are the same, so they got to be their own person. So we’re going to go there.”

After guiding the JV team to an 18-1 record in 2024, Scott Johnson is more than ready to lead the Lady Muskies back to another league title. “I’ve been waiting for this since September when I got hired. Being around these girls and just getting to see what they can do during the games.”

As the team gears up for another run at MVL success, the spirits are high, as are the expectations in 2025.

“I think all the girls would agree that we are serious, the practices are serious and we are, like, expected to do the things that we want to be successful, but we also get to have fun. We had a practice where we just played games the whole time because it was just, we needed one of those days” says senior Haylee Young.

Junior Ava Miller adds, “I think there’s a lot of pressure going into this season, because we’ve had such a big target on our back for the past like, two to four years, and so yeah, going into this year, you have to try to get another MVL. So we’re really going to try and we’re going to get it.”

Easier said than done with the ever competitive big school division, but that won’t bother or worry the young Lady Muskies.

“I expect us just to do just as good as we did last year. I mean, we lost big aspects of the team, but we also gained very good aspects to the team. So I believe in us and so far we’ve done really good” says junior Libby Brown. “I think we can make it there. We have great hitters, we have great defense. I think we’re going to do a really good job this year, just like last year.”

“Even though we did lose a big, a big part of our team, I think that the upcoming freshmen, they’re filling in the spots and us juniors, seniors this year, sophomores, we’re trying to fill in their spots too. But I think that we have the ability to be as great as what we were last year” says junior Estelle Matheney.

There’s only one way to find out if that’s the case., when John Glenn hits the road to play Steubenville on Saturday afternoon.
