Fresh Produce Providing Healthy Meals at Christ’s Table
Christ’s Table is seeing a spike in fresh produce donations this summer.
Farmers from all across the area are delivering loads of their extra fresh fruits and vegetables to the table daily, in an effort to help them serve healthy and nutritious meals to those in need. Executive Director, Keely Warden, said their generous donations have really helped.
“Oh my gosh, it helps our budget so much, we budget about $25,000 every year to go to the grocery, so that makes the average cost for a meal about 25 cents per meal, when you look at being able to the that, the only way we can do that is because of what is donated here,” Warden said.
The average American only eats one to two servings of fruits and vegetables per day, which is about five times below the recommended amount. With the community’s help, Warden said they’re working hard to change that for the people they serve.
“I just think the importance of the food pyramid, if you look at the food pyramid we were all taught in elementary school and you really look at it and you see how important fruits and vegetables really are to the human body, we just say thank you lord and thank you community for coming through and helping us truly serve hot and nutritious meals,” Warden said.
Warden said the fresh items have been a big hit. If you’d like to make a donation, contact Christ’s Table at (740) 452-9766.
