Local Farm Reaches Milestone

An historic landmark in Muskingum County is celebrating a major anniversary.

Tunis Farms in Nashport has been in existence since 1815. On Saturday, the family honored its 200 years of agriculture with a special event. Tunis Farms is just one of four family-owned farms in the county to reach this significant milestone. Judy Tunis Cordell said its important to recognize agriculture, as it is such a vital part of our community.

“Agriculture is important in Ohio, but as we look back, it’s beyond the economics, it’s the ties, it’s the different agencies, it’s the mills that are still there, it’s where we sell cattle, it’s the relationships with people that we’re celebrating today,” Cordell said.

Other local families were also recognized at the event for their accomplishments in farming. Those who came out were treated to a tour of the legendary brick house on site, as well as other fun activities.

“It’s agriculture, and we’re just appreciative to have these people come out to share in our delight, there are a lot of 100 year-old farms, they call them century farms, and we just hope that they’re around to roll into bicentennial farms, and join our 200 year recognition,” Cordell said.

Tunis Farms specializes in grains, soybeans, and corn.
