Dr. Jan Ramer Speaks at Rotary Club

Tuesday afternoon the Zanesville Noon Rotary Club brought in a very exciting speaker.

Director of Conservation Medicine at The Wilds, Dr. Jan Ramer was invited to speak to the rotary about what they do at the wilds and her most recent adventures working with gorilla doctors in Africa. We asked her how she ended up in Zanesville.

“Well I was at the Indianapolis Zoo before I went to Rwanda and at the end of my stint in Rwanda I was looking at the adds and I saw the wilds and I thought oh my gosh what a better place to end up after doing wildlife work in Africa and it’s a perfect fit” she said.

Those who attended the meeting heard about upcoming events and activities at the wilds as well as all about dr. Ramer’s trials and tribulations while working in 3 developing countries doing various experiments and studies. Attendees course saw plenty of pictures as well as a video. Ramer says she left a piece of her heart and her soul there.

“The medicine we practice there, I tell people is really more like the medicine we practiced in Africa than I did in a traditional zoo setting because we have some risk benefit decisions we have to make with the animals that are a little bit different than the average zoo. I just love it” she later told us.

You can visit the wilds on weekends now through the end of October.
