Cottrill to Unveil Brutus Buckeye Statue

Local sculptor, Alan Cottrill, is getting ready to unveil his latest masterpiece.

In November, the Ohio State University will celebrate the 50th birthday of its beloved mascot. After months of hard work and fine-tuning, Brutus Buckeye is nearing completion. The seven-foot, 478-pound bronze statue will make its way to Ohio State’s campus in just a few weeks.

“They contacted me a few months ago, I sculpted it over the summer, and we’ve been casting it in bronze out here at Coopersmill Bronze Works over the last couple of months,” Cottrill said.

The mascot extraordinaire will settle at the Schottenstein Center just in time to cheer on the Buckeyes this basketball season. Cottrill told us a little more about the process of bringing Ohio State’s vision to life.

“Before I started it, I did a maquette, or a scale model, an 18-inch scale model in wax that Ohio State had to approve, once they approved it, I started the enlargement,” Cottrill said.

The statue is scheduled to be dedicated at Ohio State on November 10.
