Two Sheridan Runners Sign With Division I Programs
Watching one athlete sign to a Division I program is an accomplishment for any coach. But Wednesday night in Thornville, Sheridan cross country coach J.D. Walters watched two of his seniors to pen to paper.
Joey Palumbo and Clay Fisher are continuing their careers at an elite level. Palumbo signed with Tennessee-Martin while Fisher will follow in family footsteps and run for Ohio Univerrsity.
“It’s a great honor being able to do this,” Palumbo said. “I’m really excited to be able to run down there with those guys.”
“It’s unbelievable,” Fisher said. “This is where I’ve always wanted to go and having that chance, it’s amazing.”
Their accolades are impressive. Palumbo is a two-time district champ and three-time All-Ohioan; Fisher is a three-time state qualifier and 2015 regional runner-up.
Both runners are thankful to the program that has dominated the MVL in recent years.
“It just shows the younger kids that if they listen to Walters he’s going to put them in the same positions that we are,” Fisher said.
“I know the younger kids are definitely looking up to us and wanting to have a signing and an event like this.”
Palumbo plans to go into engineering while Fisher is deciding between journalism and sport management.
