MCLS Mini Music Maker

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Literacy can take many forms including words, numbers and even musical symbols and notes.

Muskingum County Library System Assistant Youth Services Librarian Elayna Glover shared an event that introduces children ages 0-to-5 to some of the basic principles that can be found in music.

“30 Minute Mini Music Makers is a unique and joyful introduction to music for our youngest visitors,” Glover said. “We realized that our programs in Youth Services were lacking in music based activities. So I created this program as a way to celebrate music with our youngest patrons. Music is great for young children to learn speech. Music is slowed down so they can practice different words and expand their vocabulary. It also helps with math skills. There’s counting and patterns involved in music.”

The 30 Minute Mini Music Makers event will celebrate Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month through the use of instruments such as boom whackers, rhythm sticks, egg shakers, rhyming and dance to explore their musical and cultural practices.

“We have four sessions available,” Glover said. “We have May 6th, at the Roseville branch library at 5 p.m. May 8th, at New Concord at 4 p.m. May 21st, at Duncan Falls Philo branch, at 10:30 in the morning. And May 27th at Dresden, also at 10:30. Registration is required as our space is limited.”
