Police Officers to Run 50 Miles to Benefit Their Department

The New Concord Police Department is asking for the community’s help to purchase portable radios for officers.

The MARCS radios will provide police with a reliable means of communication.  New Concord Police Chief Trevor Hayes said as the village expands with new businesses, the need for better communication is at an all time high.

“Being a limited budget, smaller town, we have a hard time providing enough radios that we need,” Hayes said. “We have developments coming in to town, so we’re getting a little bit bigger, our coverage area. Our officers are going to be on the road. All those things are going to be improving, so we need to make sure we’re able to provide those officers the safety that they need with those radios. ”

The radios will cost almost $5,000, and to raise the funds, two officers will take part in the Lookout Mountain 50 mile trail race on Saturday December 19th. They’re looking for mileage pledges and donations. Hayes said the new radios will not only help officers, but the people they’re trying to help as well.
