Potential Land Development for New Concord Area

A local man who owns land west of the Village of New Concord met with the Muskingum County Commissioners on Monday to discuss his predicament.  The owner wants to use his land for commercial use to build businesses over the 50-acre location, but is running into difficulties with the railroad authority.

In order for the man to move forward with his project to start selling the land to prospective buyers, there needs to be a change to the railroad that runs through his property. The railroad that would be crossed to gain access to the property needs to have a crossing constructed over the tracks to ensure safety of vehicles and legal reasons.

The problem is that the railroad authority is not interested in building the railroad crossing. Charlotte Colley, Administrator of the Village of New Concord told us that it would be a great thing for the community to have this land built on.

“The development of the land could potentially bring jobs to the area. The owner has indicated that there could be some sport facilities, medical offices, and housing constructed on the land. There is also an option of 50 plus housing units such as condos and townhomes. Those are the things we are interested in seeing near the Village of New Concord,” Said Colley.

The next move in the project is a letter that is being drafted by the County Commissioners and the Village of New Concord to show joint support of the project that will then be presented to the railroad authority in efforts of approving the crossing.
