Think Before You Dig

ZANESVILLE, Ohio- Spring is approaching and many residents are considering ways to spruce up their homes. One company wants you to be aware of some things before you start your next home improvement project.

Columbia Gas of Ohio wants you to call 811 at least 48 hours before you dig. Operators will notify representatives from the utility companies to mark and flag the lines and pipes on your property free of charge.

“Homeowners and contractors are just not aware of all of the utilities lines that are buried underground. When you dig down for a project whether your a homeowner who’s putting in a fence, a mailbox, or a tree or your a contractor doing some other work even putting in a sidewalk. It’s very important to call 811 so that we can mark those locations so that you can dig safely,” said Columbia Gas of Ohio Communication Manager Dave Rau.

Calling 811 is not only for your safety. It’s the law.

“Not only is it the law, you need to call. There are new penalties if you don’t call. It’s also for your safety and everyone’s safety. We have people think I’m saving a few minutes by not calling 811. And then they find out the hit a utility line. It’s very expensive to repair. They might knock out phone or water or gas service to their neighborhood, you don’t want to be that person,” said Rau.
