SNAP-Ed Sessions Offer Recipes and Resources at Local Senior Center

ZANESVILLE, Ohio — The Muskingum County Center for Seniors teamed up with the Ohio State University Extension Office for a SNAP-Ed event focused on healthy living.

These educational events are held twice a month and are designed to promote nutritious lifestyle choices while helping attendees make the most of their SNAP benefits.

Wednesday’s session featured a simple, nutrient-packed smoothie recipe perfect for those looking for low-effort, affordable ways to eat clean.

“We’re at the senior center. I come here on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday each month at 12:15 and have about an hour-long program. Sometimes we make a snack, sometimes we just do an interactive lesson. [We’ve done] Jeopardy, today we’re making a blueberry and kale smoothie,” OSU Extension SNAP Educator Allie Murphy said.

SNAP-Ed programs like this one are especially impactful for marginalized populations including older adults who may be seeking simple, budget-friendly recipes to support wellness goals such as managing diabetes, making quick meals, and understanding nutrition labels.

“Snap-ED focuses on low income or SNAP recipients. The goal is to help people learn how to use their benefits to the max so they can eat healthy, eat well, eat good and tasty while using their benefits and getting the most out of it,” Murphy said. “Whether you receive benefits or not, things are expensive right now, so everyone wants to get the most for their buck. Coming to programs like this where you can learn or just doing your own research is important,” Murphy added.

From hands-on recipe demos to fun group activities, the goal is to equip seniors with the tools and confidence they need to maintain a healthier, more informed lifestyle no matter their budget.
