Scholarship Opportunities for Local High School Seniors

Muskingum County High School seniors have the opportunity to get more scholarships for college.

The Muskingum County Bar Association is holding its annual essay contest and applications are due April 21 by noon. This years theme is Miranda: More than Words. Chairwoman Susan McDonald said students will write their essay based on the Miranda vs. Arizona U.S. Supreme Court Case and how that’s affected our rights today.

“Miranda vs. Arizona is probably the best known United States Supreme Court case and this marks the 50 anniversary so most people will refer to that as getting your Miranda Rights read to you when you get arrested,” said McDonald.

The essay needs to be 500 to 1,000 words long, 12 point font, and double-spaced. Three winners will be selected, the first place recipient will get $1,000, second place $500 and third place $200. Essays do take more time in comparison to applications, but in the end, the extra work could be worth it.

“It does take some thought and some attention to it and it’s easy to put off, but it’s a really easy way to earn several hundred bucks for college,” said McDonald.

Essays need to be emailed to the Muskingum County Community Foundation Scholarship Central by Thursday, April 21 at noon at scholarshipcentral@mccf.org.
