4th Annual Derby Bucks Auction Looking for Donation Items

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – County fairs play a large role in the lives of agricultural families especially with the children that are in 4-H.

Many 4-H’ers raise their fair-project animals throughout the year to be shown and sold at the fair; however, the equestrian participants get to keep their horses but don’t get reimbursed for the efforts they put into their projects throughout the year.

Muskingum County Junior Fair Horse Committee Treasurer Angie Ogilbee talked about a fundraiser auction that the public can participate in, which helps to sweeten the pot for the junior fair members who only show their horses.

“We’re just trying to promote our Derby Bucks Auction,” Angie said. “This will be our 4th year. We started it to try to give our 4-H equine members a little extra incentive for their projects. We get donations of items to auction off, we also get monetary donations, and then we split that up equally after the auction to just kind of give the kids a little extra good job for their project for the year.”

Junior Fair Horse Committee Member Haley Ogilbee detailed another fundraiser that the horse committee is managing, which will help to cover renovation and maintenance costs to their fairgrounds facility.

“It’s Called Bucks for Boards,” Haley said. “Our arena is getting very old. And we’re very proud of our arena but the boards are starting to deteriorate, fall apart, due to wear, tear, weather, all of that. So we had to spend a little extra money on our building because our donations didn’t quite cover it.”

The Derby Bucks Auction will take place at 1 p.m. Tuesday, August 12th, inside the horse arena on the fairgrounds. For more information on how you can donate items for the auction or donate to the Bucks for Boards drive, you can visit their Facebook page.
