Area families came together earlier today for a little Sunday fun in honor of the late author Zane Grey.

Today marks the 5th Annual Zane Grey Day event that celebrates the opening of the National Road/Zane Grey Museum for the season. Several dozen kids and adults were invited out to enjoy some of Zane Grey’s favorite things to do while growing up here in Zanesville.

“This is for the community and we don’t do this for ourselves. We get visitors from around the world of course. But, this is our local National Road Zane Grey Museum so to have it used on a day like this is just amazing. We want the museum to be used, we don’t just be here by ourselves,” said Joanna Duncan, Education Director for the National Road/Zane Grey Museum.

Duncan said it’s important to continue having this event to keep Zane Grey’s name alive because he played a major role in Muskingum County’s history.

“He’s our author, he wrote over 80 books, those books were made into 110 movies. Zane Grey grew up in this area, his home is still up near the old hospital,” said Duncan. “He grew up here fishing in the Muskingum River, horseback riding in this area. He was an out doors man, he loved being outdoors but he loved writing.”

Duncan said this event was free to the public, but they did accept donations, which will help benefit programs like this one throughout the season.
