MCLS and Dillon State Park Team Up for Cold Moon Astronomy Event

MUSKINGUM COUNTY, OH — The Muskingum County Library System is partnering with Dillon State Park for a unique outdoor learning experience that blends astronomy, literacy, and hands-on exploration.
The event, titled Naturalist’s Learning Adventures – Book-Based Activities After Dark: Astronomy with the Cold Moon, will take place December 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Dillon State Park’s astronomy observation deck, located behind the nature center.
According to Sean Fennell, Marketing and Communications Director for MCLS, the program highlights December’s “cold moon,” the final full moon of the year.
“This is about the cold moon, which is the last full moon of December, and the orbit is actually a little bit closer to the earth at this time as well,” Fennell said. “It makes the viewing experience just a little more special this time of year. Hopefully we’ll still have some snow on the ground, some clear skies and that would be really beautiful.”
The evening also incorporates book discussions inspired by Our Moon by Rebecca Boyle. Copies are available at MCLS branches and at the event.
“This program will also be focusing on the discussion of a book which is called Our Moon by Rebecca Boyle,” Fennell explained. “You should be able to pick that up at the library if you haven’t been able to check that out yet. There should also be copies available at the event.”
While the supermoon reaches peak illumination on December 4, it will still appear full and bright during the event on December 6. The program is free and open to the public.
Those interested in attending can register by contacting the Muskingum County Library System or visiting their website.
