Larry Whissel

Larry Guy Whissel, 70 of Zanesville died Monday, December 1, 2025 at the his home under hospice care following a courageous battle with cancer for several years.

He was born February 8, 1955 in Zanesville, Ohio the son of Earl Eugene Whissel and Mary Elizabeth Galliway Whissel.
Larry was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church and was employed for 10 years with Columbia Cement. He then worked briefly with Luburg Inc. and then with AK Steel / Cliffs for 30 years, retiring in 2020. He was very active with the NTPA and the OSTPA Tractor Pulling Associations, having competed in numerous competitions over the years. Larry was also a self-employed welder and mechanic but mostly enjoyed being a grandpa.

He is survived by his wife, Brenda J. Johnson Whissel whom he married December 10, 1977; his daughters, Jodi (Curt) Knoch and Wendy (Danny) Suttiratana; 3 grandchildren, Eli, Sadie and Caeleb Suttiratana; his siblings, Robert “Bob” Whissel, Herbert “Herbie” Whissel, Howard Whissel, Shirley Smith and Evelyn (Paul) Compston; a sister-in-law, Sharon Whissel and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his two brothers, Albert “Gene” Whissel and Gerald Whissel; and a sister-in-law, Marlene Whissel.

Graveside Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, December 5, 2025 at the St. Paul Cemetery with Rev Larry Kudart officiating.
