Healthy eating is typically thought of when dieting, exercising, and after holidays. For people wanting to keep fit this year and may need help getting started a good way to ease into any change is by doing it slowly.

Registered Dietitian Licensed Dietitian, Julie Nash of The Muskingum County Women, Infants, and Children organization held through the Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department gives tips on how to eat healthy. Nash said for those who may only eat fruit once a day may want to start eating it two to three times a day by adding fruit to each meal.

“One great place to start is by increasing your fruits and vegetables,” said Nash. “If you look at your plate, try to have a visual line going half way down the middle of your plate and trying to have half the plates fruits and vegetables.”

Nash said a common mistake when stating to eat healthier is that people try to eliminate major food groups, try to get into a diet too quickly, and set their goals too high and the Muskingum County WIC organization suggests to wean into a diet instead by making small goals.

“So just starting small and building upon those goals,” said Nash. “When you eliminate major food groups it’s something you can only do for a short period of time and we’re looking for something you can do for a long period of time.”

Nash also said to plan some favorite foods into a diet and just monitor the portion size.
