ZANESVILLE, Ohio- One local organization is looking for outstanding women in the community.

The Women of Achievement program is accepting nominations for the 2017 award.

Christine Shaw, Marketing and Public Information Officer for Ohio University Zanesville, encouraged the community to submit their nominations.

“We want to continue the tradition of recognizing the women,” said Shaw.

The program that started in 1988, honors women who achieve excellence in their particular field as well as make a significant contribution to the community.

Nominations must be received by Wednesday, February 8th. Those who are selected as honorees will be inducted in the Academy of Women of Achievement at a dinner ceremony. A ceremony that doubles as a fundraiser.

“We have a scholarship program now so when we have our annual banquet we actually award scholarships from the proceeds that we get from the banquet,” said Shaw.

All proceeds from ticket sales to the ceremony dinner go to providing scholarships for Muskingum County women who attend Zane State College or Ohio University Zanesville.

Shaw said that from the 2016 awards banquet they were able to give away 12 scholarships; 6 to Zane State College students and 6 to Ohio University Zanesville students.

“We’re really excited about giving back to the community with all the proceeds going back into encouraging future women to become leaders in the community through education and through giving back as far as service,” said Shaw.

The Women of Achievement program is a partnership between Muskingum Family YMCA, Ohio University Zanesville and Zane State College.

The dinner ceremony will be held on Tuesday, April 11 at the Ohio University Zanesville/Zane State College Campus Center.
