Charles Lee Kangas passed away peacefully at his home with his family by his side on January 18, 2026, at the age of 87, following a battle with cancer. A dedicated and hard-working individual, Charles led a life marked by perseverance and a strong connection to the land.

He was born one of 6 children to the late Charles and Wanda (Bridget) Kangas in San Toy, Ohio on January 4, 1939.

Throughout his distinguished career, Charles worked diligently as a meter reader for Portersville East Branch Water, showing a remarkable commitment to his job that lasted until he was 85 years old. His work ethic was admirable; he never formally retired, holding a steadfast intention of returning to work following his recovery. His industrious spirit was evident in his past endeavors, which included drilling oil and gas wells and working as a butcher for the Finley Meat Packing Company. However, nothing defined him more than his role as a self-sufficient farmer. Charles devoted his life to the cultivation of crops, nurturing them to feed his calves, which he raised and sold with great care. Beyond his professional pursuits, Charles embraced an appreciation for the great outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoying the beauty of nature, which provided him great joy throughout his life.

Left behind to mourn his passing are his wife of 64 years, Barbara (Lynch) Kangas; his sons, Charles Kevin (Terri) Kangas and Matthew Keith Kangas; his siblings, Keitha (Dan) Hurst, Mary (Lynn) Bell, Rebecca Pettet and David (Patty) Kangas; his grandchildren, Charles Kodey (Meghan) Kangas, Kelsey (Lucas Shaw) Kangas, Laney Kangas and Tucker Keith Kangas and his great-grandchildren, Walker Kangas, Slayter Shaw and Madden Shaw.

In addition to his parents, Charles is preceded in death by his sister, Sally Woodard and his brother-in-law, Freddy Woodard.

Charles’s legacy is one of dedication, love for the land, and an uncompromising work ethic. Friends and family are invited to join together to celebrate his life at the Malta Bible Church, located at 411 S Main St, Malta, OH 43758. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, followed by a funeral service from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM with Luke Hurst, Tony Pettet and Adam Copeland officiating. Charles will then be laid to rest in Zion Cemetery in Portersville.
