Spring forward: change clocks, check smoke detectors

ZANESVILLE, Ohio- It’s time to ‘spring forward’ which means it’s also time to check your smoke detectors.
Daylight Saving Time starts on Sunday, March 12th at 2 a.m. when you’ll have to set your clocks forward one hour. Which yes, means one less hour of sleep.
Zanesville Fire Department is urging the community to check their smoke detectors when they go around the house and change their clocks.
“Smoke detectors actually do save lives. We’ve had numerous house fires where smoke detectors have gotten people up and out of the house in middle of the night so it’s something to take serious,” said ZFD firefighter Thad Krause.
The fire department is urging the importance of maintaining and replacing your smoke detector. With the help of the ABC Wilson Fund, ZFD offers free smoke detectors for those in need.
“If they can’t afford a smoke detector or they don’t have the resources to get one they can come down here to central fire station or any other station and get a free smoke detector for their house,” said Krause.
The fund was started after 3 brothers were tragically lost in a fire on Christmas Day in 1989 due to a house that didn’t have smoke detectors.
“This program brings in donations and this is what provides the smoke detectors that we give to other families,” said Krause.
For those who would like to donate to the fund, you can do so by visiting the central fire station at 332 South Street.
