ZANESVILLE, Ohio- The South Zanesville Fire Department laid one of their own to rest Wednesday morning.

James A. Hunt was 78 years-old when he passed away Saturday morning. He served on the South Zanesville Fire Department for 47 years, holding the rank of Assistant Chief.

His son, Jeffrey S. Hunt, who is also a SZFD firefighter, said his father set quite the example for his family.

“[He’s] part of 3-generations; him and his brother were firefighters, both of them now have passed on. Myself as the next generation, and my son and my daughter are both firefighters now, largely because of him and the values he’s instilled in us,” said Jeffrey.

Jeffrey said his dad was always a leader and hard-worker, the first one in and the last one out.

James was more than just a retired firefighter and role model, he was also a distinguished member of the community.

“He always loved his community, South Zanesville and the Zanesville area. He’s been part of the Eagles, the Masons, the Grotto, Sertoma; anything to give back to the community, and that’s always been what he’s been about, public service,” said Jeffrey. “He was proud to be able to serve the community in any capacity that he could and never regretted a single minute of it.”

James was honored with a procession led by the South Zanesville Fire Department, a South Zanesville Police cruiser and a Muskingum County Sheriff cruiser. His casket was transported by fire engine to the Zanesville Memorial Park where he was laid to rest.

Memorial contributions can be made to Genesis Hospice and Palliative Care in his honor.
