ZANESVILLE, Ohio- The bars aren’t the only businesses preparing for St. Paddy’s Day. The Zanesville Police Department is preparing for the holiday as well.

St. Patrick’s Day usually means a day of binge drinking. ZPD Chief, Tony Coury, said they’ll have extra patrol units out to ensure that people don’t cause harm to themselves or others.

“Be safe in what you’re doing. Go ahead and enjoy the festivities but take advantage of  any transportation the establishment that you’re at offers. Maybe set up your designated driver to make sure you have one with you or you have one that you can call to come get you. But don’t take the chance and think that you can get home,” said Chief Coury.

However, drinking and driving isn’t the only problem ZPD is worried about.

“Not only does it come with the drinking and driving but there’s other issues that take place too. There’s large crowds, there will be fights, there could be people breaking into cars so the more people we can put out there the more they see us the safer the people that are walking around feel,” said Chief Coury. “Basically it’s our job to make sure that they’ll enjoy themselves and they do so in a safe manner.”

St. Patrick’s Day is ranked as the 4th largest holiday of the year, behind New Year’s Eve, Christmas and Independence Day.
