Carroll County, OH- If you are a high school student or know of one that is looking for a summer camp packed with fun and real-world skills, Camp Canopy in Ohio is the place to be.

Every June, the woods around Leesville Lake in Carroll County’s rolling hills come alive with high schoolers who are part camper and part explorer. From , through , Camp Canopy blends classic summer camp activities with hands-on learning in forestry and wildlife.

“If you like being outside and you like summer camp type things because it’s not all like learning about trees, it’s fishing, and hiking, and swimming, and basketball, and volleyball, and campfires and all these other fun camp things you do, they’re gonna have a great time,” said Camp Canopy Co-Directory Jeremy Scherf.

This year campers will also get classes in geology, watershed studies, and a hands-on maple syrup session where they will learn how to make syrup right in their own backyards.

The camp started back in 1950 as the Ohio Forestry and Wildlife Conservation Camp. More than 10,000 students have attended over the decades. Many went on to study natural resources in college. Others simply walked away with a deeper love for Ohio’s woods and waters.

“These kids become friends with kids from all over Ohio, and really form some bonds because they’re spending the week together, and they make lifelong friendships out of it, but I also bring in 30 or 40 different natural resource professionals, we spend every day outside working in the woods, and we just have a passion for what we do, and I see friendships form between those kids and these instructors and their mentors that carry on through that too, I’ve now hired people to work for me that were kids that attended camp,” said Scherf.

Camp Canopy is open to incoming freshmen through graduating seniors up to age 19. The cost is $500 dollars if you register by  dollars after that, with financial assistance available. The deadline is . They even award college scholarships at the end of the week.
