ZANESVILLE, OH – It’s time to dig into a new book! The Muskingum County Library System is inviting the community to “Unearth a Story” during this year’s summer reading program.

This year’s summer reading theme is Unearth a Story, and readers of all ages are invited to join the fun. To celebrate, the Muskingum County Library System is hosting a Summer Reading Kick-Off Party at the John McIntire Liibrary on Saturday, May 30th from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“It’s going to be a big party. We’re going to have games outside, a green screen so you can take fun pictures with dinosaurs, and we’re going to have The Good Dinosaur playing in the auditorium on the big screen. There will be a lot of activities and it’s a great chance to sign up for summer reading, get excited about it, and get some goodies. A scavenger hunt is also happening all over the library. So, if you haven’t seen the new space, now is a good time to come check it out.” MCLS Adult Services Manager, Heather Phillips said.

Library leaders say they’re especially excited to fully celebrate summer reading back inside the renovated main library this year.

“Last year we had to improvise with the Mini-Mac location. Now that we’re back in the main library, we’re excited to be able to really stretch out our legs and have a huge summer reading program.” MCLS Youth Service Manager, Katie Merritt said.

Readers can track their progress online through the Beanstack app or by using a paper reading tracker. Every minute spent reading helps participants earn raffle tickets for prizes while contributing toward the library system’s community-wide reading goal.

“We have a summer reading goal this year, and it is set on the minutes read across the county. This year, the goal is 2.5 million minutes read.” MCLS Marketing and Community Relations Director, Seam Fennell said.

Every MCLS branch will also put its own unique spin on this year’s theme with special kick-off events and activities throughout the summer. For more information or to register for summer reading, visit the Muskingum County Library System’s website.
