Driving during a rain storm

Zanesville, Ohio- Anyone who has been outside today or even looked outside can see, there is a lot of rain coming down.

With all of this rain, driving conditions change and people have to slow down as well as look at the roads to see if they’re safe to drive.

“If your coming up to water that is coming across the road, you don’t want to enter that water,” said Newton Township Fire Department Chief Allen Deaver. Anything greater than 6 inches of water it’s going to be up to your rocker panels and your car will actually start to float.”

Deaver said that at a foot of water, you car will actually start moving the car sideways. When a road is drivable, preparation is key to make sure you car can handle to roads.

“Before the rain hits, you have to make sure you have good tires on your car,” said  Deaver. “The tread of the tires is what gets rain out from under them and gives you traction. If you have bold tires you’re going to hydroplane, easy.”

Deaver said to allow for more room between you and other cars because when a road is slick, a car can take up to twice the distance as normal to stop.
