Cambridge YMCA team prepares for gymnastics nationals

CAMBRIDGE, Ohio – The Cambridge YMCA gymnastics team is getting ready to compete on the national stage.
This week 12 of their athletes will travel down to Savannah, GA for the national competition. The Guernsey County athletes will compete in the vault, bars, beam, and floor against thousands of athletes from over 500 different YMCA’s from around the country. Team head coach Cheryl Matthews has been coaching gymnastics for 37-years and said her team is ready for the competition.
“They’ve worked hours and hours and worked hard and fixed everything that we’ve asked them to fix. So we’re prepared. We’re peaking at the right time,” Matthews said.
Most of the athletes have been competing in gymnastics for about five years and for many of them it’s the first time they’ve ever been to nationals. Gymnast Alexis Ross is excited for the chance to get to compete.
“It’s really fun because my teammates love and support me all the time and it encourages me to do my best,” Ross said.
The team will leave this week for the competition and will compete on Friday and Saturday.
