ZANESVILLE, OH – July is Life Guard Appreciation month and what a better time to thank those who are spending the warm months making sure others are safe.

At the Muskingum County Family YMCA, there will be a white board up all month long for patrons to leave notes for the life guards.

YMCA Aquatic Director, Jackie Tellez, says they receive little goodie bags with trinkets and rubber ducks, but the big appreciation gift comes next weekend.

“But one thing I’m super excited about, is we are going up to Zoombezi Bay next weekend.” Tellez said. “So that we can actually enjoy the water and not just watch it.”

Tellez says the life guards play a vital role in keeping the Y not only safe but providing education to the members.

She says if you’ve been looking to become a life guard, the Y has classes open and signing up is just a phone call away.

“So some of the things that the Life Guards do here isn’t just watching the water, they’re also getting down, talking to our members, making sure everybody’s doing okay because there are so many things going on with our members. Whether it’s sugar, or an amputation, our life guards go above and beyond to make sure everybody’s enjoying their time here at the Y.” Tellez said. “I have classes going on all of the time, so they can sign up for a class, put in an application, stop in and talk to me, we’re always trying to get life guards here at the Y.”

If you are interested in becoming a life guard, you can call the Y at (740)-454-4767.
